Use a new course shell or copy of an existing course for a new class / cohort

Request a Course Shell

  1. Request a new Moodle Course Shell at http://cid.vcc.ca/p1-dl/instructions/moodle/request-moodle-shell.html
  2. Select a blank shell, a copy of an existing course, or a template course shell.
  3. Provide all of the required Course information, User Information and Course Shell information.
  4. Print a copy for your records.
  5. Select the Submit button to complete your request. (Your course shell should be ready in 1-2 business days).
  6. If you have requested a course shell that requires development, refer to http://cid.vcc.ca/p1-dl/moodle-guides_v2.html for additional information.

Unhide the Course

  1. While logged into your course, select Settings > Course Administration > Edit settings
  2. If you are using the groups feature in your course, select Groups > Separate groups or Visible groups as appropriate. (Contact elsupport@vcc.ca for help setting up groups or cohorts.)
  3. Scroll down to Availability and select This course is available to students. (Note that once you have students enrolled in your course they will be able to enter it now so you may wish to wait until the actual start date to make this change.)
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save changes.

Setting up Student Enrolment Options

    If not already done, select Settings > Course administration > Users > Enrolment methods.
    Select Choose to pick one of the following methods:

    Accept the settings on the following screen, and select the Add method button:

    Manual enrolments

    Allows you to enroll your students manually

    • Select the Enrol users icon under Edit

    • Locate your students individually using the Search field under Not enrolled users. Note: there is often more than one student with the same name so be sure to verify you have the right student by checking their email address provided in the Matching not enrolled users box with a student list from the Registrars Office.
    • Select the correct student by selecting their name, then select the Add button to enroll them into the course.
    • Alternatively, you may enroll an entire cohort of students by selecting Enroll cohort (contact dlsupport @ vcc.ca to set this up).

    Self enrolment

    Allows you to set an enrolment key (or multiple keys if groups are used) to enable students with the key to enroll themselves in your course

    • Set Allow self enrolments to Yes.
    • Enter an enrolment key. Keep this simple enough that students will be less likely to enter it incorrectly
      (e.g., zebra1234 versus Zebra 1234).
      Note: If left blank, any user may enroll in the course.

    • Select the Add method button to save your settings:

Banner/Moodle Enrolment Option

    Once setup, automatically enrolls students into predetermined Moodle shells based on Banner registrations.
